Mera peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It lies at the altitude of 6470m above the sea level. Mera Peak is the popular peak climbing with an easy route. It offers an opportunity to encounter the Mount Everest and other 8000 meters peaks closely. We mostly follow the off the beaten track along the Hinku Honku Valley.
The trip of mera peak runs through the iconic Khumbu region. The trekking trial has a lot to offer; unique Sherpa setlements, lush forests, bridges avove the river, Gompas, Monastries prayer flags and many more. meeting so that we can get to know each other better.
Today in the morning we will be having a full trek brief, you get to meet your leader and guide. Since it’s a free
day today for those who need to buy gear and equipment they can do so. You guys can also head down the
city to explore this ancient city with magnificent sculptures and enjoy your day, if you wish so we can arrange
a sightseeing tour of the city.
We leave our hotel and transfer you to the airport, after which we will fly to Lukla (2800m). From here will
start our trek towards Piuyan (2800m). While climbing and descending some of the steep slopes we will pass
through Surkye and Chotok La but still, the views are good. We will spend our night at Piuyan.
After breakfast we leave Piuyan, leaving the main trail behind we instead diverge towards the more quieter
side trail with some steep climb and reach Khari La (3048m), moving forward we pass through terrace
farmland indicating human settlement nearby after leaving the farmland we reach our today’s destination of
Pangkongma (2900m) which is also a small trade center.
Today we climb towards Pangkongma La 3170m, climbing through steel slopes walking through the beautiful
lush forest of bamboo and rhododendron we reach Pangkongma La 3170m. From here you can view Naulekh,
few minutes of descend down the pass we will be able to take our first glance of Mera peak’s south face, the
view is amazing and you will feel rejuvenated for the long journey downwards towards the bottom of the
valley towards the Hinku River. We will have our lunch before crossing the Hinku River. After lunch we cross
the Hinku River using the suspension bridge, from the other side we start our climb towards Nashing Dingma
(2963m) which will take us approx. 2hrs. We stay here for tonight.
Today again we follow the path which moves up and down the valley, the climb to Surkie La(3060m) is
especially steep. After a brief rest and hydrating ourselves we again move to climb up towards Chholem
Kharka (3600m). We have our lunch here and take a rest for today.
After breakfast, we move out again climbing through steep slopes and ridges, a mountainous way. We will be
ascending the steep stone steps to reach the first col at 4300m, and then moving forward to the second col at
4470m. Looking towards the east we get a magnificent view of Mt. Kanchenjunga a quite memorable view.
Leaving second col we descend down towards the holy lakes at Panch Pokhari. These five lakes are beautiful
and holy to the Hindus and Buddhists. Moving past the lakes we reach Khola Kharka.
Leaving Khola Kharka, we start the day by climbing the steep stone slopes reaching a point from where we get
an amazing view of Pike Peak, Numbur, and Lamjura Pass. Walking past we now move towards Mojang Khola
which is a steep descent, crossing the river we now move past another steep descent to reach Hinku Khola.
Following the river we get to a bridge which we cross the raging river to reach Kote. We have our lunch here
and rest for today.
We move out following the river to the rocky trail upstream, leaving Kote behind we get a view of three Mera Peaks of Mera. Following the trail, we move forward ascending the valley while witnessing amazing views of Kyashar peak, Kusum Kanguru, and the East peak ahead of us. After a brief stop at Saure, we move forward
towards Tangnang where we have our lunch and take our rest. We will be staying here for two nights.
Today we spend our time acclimatizing to the altitude. We take a walk to the top of the ridge which is located
south of Tangnag. As well as being acclimatized we get to see a great view of Kusum Kanguru, Kyeshar and
East peak and Mera La after which we will return back to have our lunch and take a rest.
Today we head for Khare, Mera Peak Base Camp at 4900m. The walk is relatively short as we climb a steep
trail out of Tangnag overlooking Kyeshar peak. Climbing up the valley we move past Dig Kharka from where
the trail becomes a bit easier till we reach the last steep climb through which we reach Khare. Having our
lunch here we have the rest of the day free.
Today after we check all our necessary equipment, we head up the glacier towards Mera La, we will practice
with our ice axe, crampon and learn rope techniques and the use of jumar.
Leaving Khare we walk towards Mera La, a short but steep climb. The trail gets steeper as we continue
forward and sometimes with the addition of snow we will have to use our crampons and helmet while crossing the steep rocky path towards the glacier. After reaching the glacier the slopes ease off and we follow our way up towards Mera La where we stay tonight.
A short day as we ascend the Mera glacier and through the rocky path to High Camp (5800m). We get to see
amazing views of the Himalayan Giants such as Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, and Cho Oyu which is quite remarkable, we will also be able to see the route which we will be taking tomorrow. Checking our pieces of equipment and preparing our clothes for tomorrow, we take our rest looking out towards the setting sun on the face of Makalu.
Today will be a long day as we head for the summit, we will start early around 2 am. You will need to carry
your ice axe and wear your crampon as we will be ascending the wide-open glacier and walking past crevasses.
The terrain might not be steep but due to high altitude and cold wind which takes a toll on our body will slow
us down. Now leaving the open glacier behind the trail heads toward the steep ridge after which it swings
right towards the easier ground, approaching the summit we rest at a col while the Sherpas fix the safety rope
to the bottom for the last part of the summit. As the last 50m before the summit is the steepest part of the
climb, we will use our jumar for this section, it is steep and a challenging climb to the summit. Reaching the
summit we get to see the magnificent view of the sun rising over the great Himalayan giants such as
Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Everest, and Cho Oyu. This alone makes the trip worth it. After enjoying the view from
the Summit, we descend back down abseiling the steep parts and using fixed ropes towards Col. From here
onwards the descent becomes quicker and easy though we still need to be roped up as we move down
towards the Base Camp. After such a challenging and long journey to the top feeling rewarded we take our
leave here and take a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast we leave the Base Camp behind, taking the long but beautiful journey back retracing our way
back towards Tangnag, where we have our lunch. Moving past Tangnag and walking further down the valley
we reach Kote where we will be spending our night.
Leaving Kote, we have a hard day ahead as we move forward and begin our ascent of Zatrwa La pass which
takes us back to Lula. We follow the small rocky trail that takes us down to Hinku Valley. With the path moving
up and down the valley some part of it is steep, as we leave Hinku Valley we start our climb through the forest
reaching Toktar, a small area inside the forest with teahouses. Here we have our lunch. Moving forward we
continue climbing through the forest walking past the Rhododendron tree to a more clear path we get to view
the Mountains emerging across the valley. On a clear day, we can view the summit of Mera, Peak 41, and
Naulekh. Moving forward we climb higher retracing the steps back. The trail eases as we approach Chetrabu.
step along the way. After leaving the lodge we start with a steep ascend towards the highest point of Zatrwa
La at 4640m, as with all the Himalayan viewpoints we get a great view from here as well. After enjoying the
view we now descend down towards the second point of Zatrwa La at 4540m, moving past towards Kharka
Tseng we encounter another steep descent where the trail is steep with icy pathways so we will be using
crampons here. We have our lunch here then continue our descent to Chutenga on a rocky path, leaving
Chutenga we reach Lukla after a few hours of walking. We stay for the night here.
We take our flight back to Kathmandu and drive back to our hotel, where you can get relaxed and refreshed.
