The first ever Trekking and Mountaineering Company in Nepal was Mountain Travel, founded in the early 1960s by Gurkha Officer Col. Jimmy Roberts, but managed from the 1970's by Mike Cheney and Purna Sherpa. From these men and their commitment to the welfare of the staff (guides and porters), the comfort and safety of their clients, and their respect for the countryside and environment, all the ethos of the current trekking industry in Nepal descends. After Mountain Travel was sold, they went on to start Sherpa Co-Operative Trekking, and Rover Treks & Expeditions, helped in no small part by the young British company Exodus Treks, who committed their Nepalese clients to Mike and Purna's expert hands. The Manager of Footloose in the Himalaya is Purna's son, Karma, who has inherited all the wealth of experience of his father, and continues to put it to superb use today. I asked Footloose to come up with a short trip in Nepal to fit in with another trek I had planned. They were very efficient in offering several options, one of which was the Gosaikunda trek, which I went for. Langtang is more picturesque than other, higher parts of Nepal and the route we took went through a lot of forest areas. Gosaikunda lakes are a sacred area and part of the trek followed the routes 'pilgrims' take to bathe in the lake. My guide Khusman was excellant, had a wide knowledge of the area and hi organisational skills made sure the trek went smoothly. In all a very enjoyable. The tea houses are basic but comfortable, and the food is westernised, pretty much the same as the rest of Nepal.
The Langtang area of Nepal is well worth exploring, especially if it is your first time trekking in Nepal and I would highly recommend Footloose to be your guide.
